#11 is a clever spot.
People get tattoos in honor of family members and hobbies, and the same goes for celebrities. After working on a movie for months, or in some cases, years, it’s no wonder actors get attached to a few of their favorite roles.
When actors take on a role, they sign up for a temporary gig. As it turns out, though, some of them found their characters to be so special that they wanted to immortalize their experiences. Here are 12 celebrities who got tattoos to honor their TV and movie roles.
Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and Jeremy Renner got the Avengers symbol tattoo. Mark Ruffalo didn’t get one because he is afraid of needles, so it seems that the Hulk is not that tough after all.
Sophie Turner got a House Stark’s sigil (a direwolf) ink with her line, “The pack survives.”
Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson, Janel Parrish, and Sasha Pieterse got matching ink on their famous “Shhh” index finger with the intials of their characters.
Neil Patrick Harris got his first tattoo in honor of A Series of Unfortunate Events getting renewed. He chose a “scamp stamp” of the Volunteer Fire Department (V.F.D.) insignia on his ankle, the same tattoo as his character Count Olaf had.
Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Dominic Monaghan (Merry), Sean Astin (Sam), Billy Boyd (Pippin), and Sean Bean (Boromir) each got the number nine written in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Elvish Tengwar script, although John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli, famously declined.
Margot Robbie acquired a tattoo gun during filming, and she’s since given over 25 tattoos with it. Soon after, other Squad members like Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg) and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) started posting photos of their own ink. Kinnaman shared a picture of his new “skwad” tattoo, courtesy of co-star Will Smith, who plays Deadshot.
Game of Thrones stars Maisie Williams, and Sophie Turner got matching tattoos to symbolize the date they were cast on the HBO show.
Turner said:
“We always said that we wanted them so we got the date 07.08.09 on our arms because that’s the date that both of us found out we’d got our roles in Game Of Thrones. So when we had a day off from filming in Belfast, we just went to a tattoo place and got it done.”
Tommy Dorfman and Alisha Boe, as well as executive producer Selena Gomez, all got semicolon tattoos to commemorate the show and support Project Semicolon, which works with cases of suicide and psychological health.
Bryan Cranston’s tattoo is tiny and on the inside of his finger, and it’s the symbol for Breaking Bad. He portrayed Walter White, the genius meth-making science teacher with cancer.
Aaron Paul got a Breaking Bad tattoo the day they finished filming. It’s the famous quote from Mike: “No half measures.”
Tom Holland got the Spidey logo on the bottom of his foot. Holland shared that the ink kept fading so it was done three times.
Emilia Clarke now has a permanent reminder of her queen bee status. The Game of Thrones star got her first tattoo, a little bumblebee on her little finger, just like her character in Me Before You.
