She gave him a laptop, a smartphone and some expensive clothes.
Ah, to be young and in love. Most teenagers think that the person that they are with at their tender age is going to be the one for them forever. Add expensive gifts to the mix, and the relationship becomes even harder to back away from.
That seemed to be the case of a 16-year-old boy from the Philippines. The Grade 9 student of Trece Martires National High School in Trece Martires, Cavite, who is only identified as “Noel,” ran away with his 26-year-old teacher Angelica who is known for showering him with expensive things.
For those who watch crime and investigation documentaries, you may be aware that what Angelica did to Noel is called “child grooming.”
A definition of the term read:
“Child grooming is befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child, and sometimes the family, to lower the child’s inhibitions with the objective of se xual abuse.
Child groomers might look for opportunities to have time alone with the child, which can be done by offering to babysit; the groomers may also invite the child for sleepovers, for opportunistic bed sharing. They might give gifts or money to the child in exchange for se xual contact, or for no apparent reason.”
Although Noel is not a child anymore, he is still a minor. And since Angelica is already in her 20s, she should’ve known better.
According to Noel’s parents, he was only in ninth grade when he met the teacher on Facebook. Angelica pretended to be 15 years old at the time. Since they had no idea who she was, the mother tried to talk his son out of meeting up with Angelica, who he considered as his girlfriend.
After they first met, Noel brought Angelica home. The sneaky teacher even wore a school uniform so Noel’s parents had no reason to think other than her claims.
Thinking that they were both minors, Noel’s parent didn’t allow the young couple to stay in his room. The teen was so upset with his parents that he ran away with Angelica.
The teen would soon discover that his 15-year-old girlfriend turned out to be a 26-year-old teacher at a preschool in Baclaran.
According to Noel’s mother, Angelica showered their son with lavish gifts. She even claimed to be the daughter of a wealthy Chinese businessman.
Not knowing how to convince their son to go back home, Noel’s parents asked help from Raffy Tulfo (a Filipino broadcast journalist who hosts the show “Raffy Tulfo In Action”) so Angelica will bring their minor son back to them.
Tulfo reminded the teacher that she could face charges because Noel is still a minor. But if she returns him and lets him finish his studies, then they may later get the parents’ blessings to live together.
