Officials reminded that religious groups that continue to hold large gatherings are putting the public "at great risk."
Last Mother’s Day, a person who later tested positive of the coronavirus attended a church service in California. This has since led to the exposure of 180 people.
The infected individual, who was informed of the test result a day after the service, has since been in home quarantine, according to Butte County Public Health officials. Now the church members have likewise been instructed the church members to self-quarantine following their exposure to the person, with testing expected to start soon.
It can be remembered that Governor Gavin Newsom issued an order to prohibit mass gatherings to help prevent the spread of the outbreak.
Eventually, the government began to relax restrictions but still emphasized that large religious gatherings are not allowed. Despite the order, some religious organizations continued to hold meetings.
According to Danette York, director of Butte County Public Health:
“At this time, organizations that hold in-person services or gatherings are putting the health and safety of their congregations, the general public and our local ability to open up at great risk.”
Local health authorities did not specifically mention the religious organization by name but continued to remind the public to observe safety measures.
“We implore everyone to follow the State order and our reopening plan to help combat the potential spread of Covid-19,” an official statement read.
