"The question of how the boy was able to pick up and fire the weapon is of great concern and is being investigated," the sheriff said.
A two-year-old boy reportedly shot both of his parents after picking up a gun from a nightstand in their home. According to authorities, the toddler’s father and mother were both injured plus the boy also suffered a wound on the face as a result of the incident.
This happened in West Bath, Maine last Wednesday, May 12. In a media interview, Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said that the child picked up the 9mm semi-automatic handgun on his parent’s nightstand and later fired it. The boy’s mother, 22, was injured on the leg while his father, 25, sustained an injury on the back of his head.
The family was later rushed to the Mid Coast Hospital. Fortunately, all injuries were non-life-threatening and the couple’s 3-week-old infant remained unharmed.
Sheriff Merry shared:
“The question of how the boy was able to pick up and fire the weapon is of great concern and is being investigated. This situation, while disturbing, could have had an even more tragic ending.”
Merry likewise added that he hopes the incident would serve “as a warning to the public to ensure firearms are kept in a locked, secure location out of reach of children.”
Naturally, netizens couldn’t help but comment on the incident soon after the story went viral on social media.
