“This is the strongest tropical cyclone on Earth, thus far, in 2020,” said a meteorologist.
Experts are warning those in the path of Super Typhoon Goni to prepare and stay safe as it moves closer and closer to the Philippines. The storm has continually intensified and will likely cause massive damage once it makes landfall.
Goni, locally known in the Philippines as Rolly, has been described by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) as “a compact but very powerful system,” reported the Washington Post.
The news source further shared that the typhoon has emerged as”the strongest storm on Earth since Hurricane Dorian in 2019 and the most intense in the western Pacific since Super Typhoon Meranti in 2016. Both Dorian and Meranti also saw their winds peak at around 185 mph.”
On Twitter, meteorologist Steve Bowen labeled Goni as the “strongest tropical cyclone on Earth, thus far, in 2020.”
Meanwhile, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has reminded the public that the typhoon will bring “heavy to intense rains” which may result to flooding (including flash floods) and landslides.
In an advisory issued at 8:00 AM, October 31, 2020, PAG-ASA said that the typhoon “will continue moving west-southwestward today towards the sea off the coast of Bicol before turning west-northwestward tomorrow early morning.”
Meanwhile, the center of the eye of the typhoon is expected to “pass very close to Catanduanes tomorrow early morning, over the Calaguas Islands and very close to mainland Camarines Provinces tomorrow morning, and over Polillo Islands and mainland Quezon tomorrow afternoon or early evening.”
“After crossing Central Luzon, the center of “ROLLY” is forecast to exit the mainland Luzon landmass on Monday morning,” added PAG-ASA.
