50,000 Fans Gather In New Zealand For World’s Biggest Concert Since The Pandemic Began

• A huge concert featuring the band Six60 has been held in New Zealand last Saturday, April 24.
• The event was attended by over 50,000 fans.
• Auckland has “shown the world this week that in the midst of a global pandemic, we can live close to normality,” said Mayor Phil Goff.

While some countries are still implementing lockdowns to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, New Zealanders are already attending concerts – with no masks or social distancing required.

As we’ve seen in recent reports, 50,000 people gathered at the Eden Park in Auckland to witness a sold-out concert featuring the band Six60 last Saturday, April 24. According to the organizers, it has been the world’s largest live music event since the pandemic began.

A historic concert in New Zealand

Mayor Phil Goff said in a statement:

“Our city has shown the world this week that in the midst of a global pandemic, we can live close to normality in Auckland.”

According to reports, Six60 has been traveling the country to play for crowds and this event marks their tour finale. The band also invited Maori performers onstage and paid tribute to military musicians.

“We are fortunate.”

As Frontman Matiu Walters told the media:

“We know what it’s like to be in lockdown. It sucked. And we didn’t know if we’d be able to play gigs again. But we are fortunate, for a few reasons, here in New Zealand.”

Guitarist Ji Fraser also added:

“It was amazing to see how fanatical people were, and excited about being out and seeing live music, and seeing something to drag them out of a long, brutal year. It was very special.”

As of this writing, New Zealand has only recorded 2,609 coronavirus cases and 26 deaths since the start of the pandemic. The country has often been praised for its effective response to the Covid-19 crisis.
