6 In-Flight Habits That Can Help You Survive a Plane Crash
There are always odds of being killed everytime you step foot in an airplane and travel by air. But it doesn’t mean you just have to leave everything to chance; you can survive a plane crash if you practice these habits that can actually save your life.
#1 Leave your carry-on bag on the plane
When you only have a little more than minute to evacuate a burning place, you don’t have time to search and reach for your luggage anymore. So in an emergency event, forget about your stuff and just save your life.
#2 Get a seat behind the wings
According to a study of 20 commercial jet crashes made by Popular Mechanics, there’s a 69% chance of survival for those who are seated in the rear cabin compared to those in first class, who have 49%.
#3 Sit on a brace position
In 2015, Boeing did a crash simulation and discovered that passengers with both their seat belts on and sitting on a brace position (head cradled against the knees, feet flat on the floor) were the most probable to survive a plane crash. Those with seat belts on but not in the brace position suffered head injuries while those who had no seat belts on and did not sit on a brace position perished on impact.
#4 Put the oxygen mask immediately during a crash
Grab the mask as soon as it drops from above and put it on immediately. The decrease in oxygen during the loss of cabin pressure can render you unconscious in as fast as 20 seconds.
#5 Wear clothes with non-flammable fabric
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, 68% of plane crash fatalities happen during post-crash fires so if you are wearing flammable fibers in the middle of one, you will most likely get injured or die. On the day of your flight, make the effort to prepare an outfit made of natural materials such as wool or cotton and avoid fabrics such as nylon and polyester.
#6 Wear comfortable sneakers or flats and always keep them on during the flight
It’s so tempting to wear flip-flops for comfort but this can be your downfall in the event of a crash. Imagine having to search for your footwear in the middle of a crash or evacuation. On the opposite end, high heels can make you stumble and fall in the middle of chaos.
