McDonald’s Opens Tiny Restaurant For Bees
If you travel the world, you’ll be opened to new experiences and cultures. However, one thing’s for certain no matter where you go in the world: you’ll never escape the shadow that is McDonald’s.
Interestingly, this one particular McDonald’s restaurant in Sweden is something you wouldn’t see in other places, and it is called the McHive. It’s the exact opposite of a McMansion. The McHive is the world’s smallest McDonald’s, and it’s not even fit for humans.
McDonald’s has unveiled a mini version of its iconic restaurant in a bid to attract thousands of “important guests” every day. Complete with drive-thru windows and al fresco tables, the fast food company is calling the branch it’s “smallest McDonald’s in the world,” although it is actually a fully functioning beehive.
If you take a look inside, you won’t find a McFlurry machine or deep-fryer, but a colony of buzzing bees between several “hive frames,” which hold the honeycomb within the hive enclosure.
The McHive is a collaboration between McDonald’s and NORD DDB, a Nordic creative agency, to pay homage and draw attention to the several McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden. They put beehives on their roofs and wildflowers in their green spaces in an effort to save the bees.
Christoffer Rönnblad, marketing director of McDonald’s Sweden, said:
“We have a lot of really devoted franchisees who contribute to our sustainability work, and it feels good that we can use our size to amplify such a great idea as beehives on the rooftops.”
With thousands of McDonald’s restaurants across the globe, this gesture would certainly have a positive impact on bee numbers, so here’s hoping the initiative does continue to spread beyond Swedish shores.
As you probably know, bees are a crucial part of keeping the planet’s ecosystems healthy and functioning since bees pollinate about three-quarters of our plants. Unfortunately, due to climate change and the use of pesticides, there has been a steady decline in the bee population. This would spell disaster since no bees means no food for all of us.
