Ever wonder why several people on your social media feed had been posting photos of their semicolon tattoos?

The punctuation mark tattoos have become an instant hit on Instagram and Twitter as more people join the online craze. Interestingly, it is for a good cause.

Apparently, people have been drawing or even inking semicolons on their wrists to show their support to a non-profit mental health organisation called The Semicolon Project. The organisation aims to raise awareness about mental health issues  such as depression, self-harm, anxiety, and suicide. Ultimately, its goal is to encourage people battling these health issues to seek help and reach out.

So why did they choose the semicolon punctuation mark to symbolize the movement?

The organisers explained the touching reason for such choice on their website: “A semicolon represents a sentence the author could have ended, but chose not to.”

“That author is you and the sentence is your life.”

“By writing a semicolon on your wrist, you are making a promise to yourself that it is ok to reach out and seek for help.”

Aside from posting photos of their semicolon markings, the participants have also shared the relevance of the project to their lives.

Tomorrow I will be getting a semicolon tattoo to symbolise my courage of over coming the darkest time in my life && I’m so grateful for those who have stuck by me. I will always suffer from depression but the self harm && suicide ideation has finally ceased. The sentence of my life is not over; #semicolonproject,” one Instagram user said.
