  • The State of New Mexico reported its second case of bubonic plague in a span of 2 weeks.
  • The second case is a 20-year old man who eventually died from the disease.
  • Meanwhile in China, another village was locked down with another reported death from the plague.

It seems that the horrors that 2020 has to offer is still far from over. With many countries still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, the bubonic plague is also making its comeback.

The said plague, also known as black death, is also one of the deadliest pandemics in history with an estimated 25-50 million deaths during its first outbreak in the medieval times.

This year, the plague was first detected in the city of Bayannur in Inner Mongolia. Chinese authorities acted swiftly and placed Bayannur in Stage 3 lockdown. However, one more death was reported in Suji Xincun Village of Batou City earlier in August. This also resulted to the lockdown of the city.

Meanwhile in the United States, the state of New Mexico first reported a bubonic plague case of a 60-year old man last July. In a span of less than one month, a second case is now reported. Unfortunately, the second case, a 20-year old man died from septicemia. The patient was from Rio Arriba County and died shortly after hospitalization.

Bubonic plague is highly infectious via skin and fluid contact from the infected person. It is also transmissible through flea bites from infected rodents or eating infected meat.

Even with antibiotic treatments, mortality rate can go as high as 10% and without fast treatment, mortality can be as high as 30-40%.

Local health authorities from the state of New Mexico do not seem all that much concerned about the second case and just issued a warning,

Plague activity in New Mexico is usually highest during the summer months, so it is especially important now to take precautions to avoid rodents and their fleas which can expose you to the plague.

There are no news whether close contacts of the dead patient hass already been tested for the infection. Investigations will be carried out, officials assured.

“An environmental investigation will take place at the person’s home to look for ongoing risk to immediate family members, neighbors and others in the surrounding community.”
