Woman Converts An Old Bunker From World War II Into An Astounding Underground Haven
There is no limit to a man’s imagination–his willingness to think outside the box and make something spectacular. More so to find beauty and endless possibilities in things that seem impossible.
Meanwhile, homes continue to be the product of human’s ingenuity and subject for amazing transformations, the famous Tiny House Movement for one. Now we are about to witness another impressive and unique “before and after” home makeover–this time with its remarkable and historical feel. Who would have thought that an old bunker from World War II can be like the modern homes that we admire today?
It used to be like this, old and lifeless.
Circa 1942, this bunker was built in Britain to serve as a bomb-proof shelter for civilians during the World War II. However, the place has fallen into decay over the years and was even deemed impossible to restore. Not until Elizabeth Strutton did wonders to the place and brought it back to life .
Now here it is in all its glory.
The whole area costs $200,000 but looking at the results, Elizabeth said the money she spent paid off.
“Living in here, you do really appreciate the way people fought – you feel a sort of connection with what they were doing,” she added.
It took her 5 years to convert the underground space.
The layout is still the same but the ventilation system, water and drainage pipes are already modernized.
Purpose-built sun tubes are also present to provide natural light for this underground haven.
The interior also speaks so much about the incredible transformation, not a sign of a wartime shelter.
It features a spacious living room and kitchen area, 2 bathrooms and 3 bedrooms.
“The building process was very difficult. It hasn’t been done before so the builders weren’t used to this kind of space. It took much longer and much more money than expected,” Elizabeth told the Daily Mail.
But several veterans also come to visit Elizabeth’s converted home and are delighted to see the place once again.
They appreciate the incredible changes about it but more so its importance and special place in history.
“It is a magical fortress. You are at the end of the world and living history. You don’t know what you’re letting yourself in for when you take this kind of thing on, but I know I live in the best place in the world now.”
“I could live here forever. It is beautiful and special,” she said.
How do you find this place? Would you live here? Share your thoughts in the comment box.
