Taking a shower is a hygienic activity that we must perform every day, or is it? An expert said that may not be the case all the time.

Turns out, showering every day is not as healthy as people perceive it is. In fact, doing it in a regular basis can do more harm than good. Baffled? Read on to find out what we mean…

A dermatologist and an assistant professor at the University of California named Dr Casey Carlos explains that showering excessively is not good and that it can be quite challenging to instruct people about the appropriate time to use soap. You see, it’s not all the time that people need a soap.

Basics Of Skin Care

The science to cleaning and taking care of the skin is not in any way complicated. The role of soap in any regimen is to remove the oil from the skin. The resulting effect is that the skin becomes dry and feels rough. The uppermost layer of the skin is filled with dead skin cells. Although it may sound very unhealthy and disgusting, it is not. In fact, it protects the deeper layers of the skin.

The top layer is also made up of fats and lipids, which serve as our natural moisturizers. The skin naturally produces oils to protect against over drying. Aside from that, we have the ability to protect ourselves against infections through the good bacteria that the skin generate.

Layers Of The Skin

However, every time we shower, that ability of the skin to repair and perform these wonderful jobs lowers down.

The outer skin layer gets stripped off hence, more showers mean good bye to more protection.

Soaping In The Right Places

Where to use soap

Soap can be harsh to the skin and for this, Carlos recommends people to limit its use to select parts of the body only. These include armpits, groin and feet. Applying soap on chest, back, arms and legs is not always advisable because because our skin can clean itself naturally.

Don’t forget the hair

Don't forget the hair

Hair is a part of the integumentary (translation: skin/covering) system. Washing your hair too much can dry the hair and scalp and cause dandruff. When we shampoo too much, the scalp becomes excessively dry. In turn, it compensates by producing more oils, which results in greasy hair.

Aside from these health benefits, not taking a shower can actually provide other perks! For one, it can save you time and energy. Also, it can help you save money on water bill, soap and shampoo.
