According to official reports, Thailand ranks as the country with the second highest obesity rate in South-East Asia.

Of course, this ranking may be attributed to the fact that many of Thailand’s favorite native cuisine are, well, pretty greasy to say the least. So autonomous government agency Thai Health Promotion Foundation hooked up with advertising firm BBDO Bangkok to come up with a brilliant, innovative solution.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the AbsorbPlate.

AbsorbPlate has hundreds of small holes that cut off about 30 calories from greasy meals.

Taking its design inspiration from the surface of a sponge, the promotional video tells us that this amazing plate can soak up around 7 ml of oil – or about 30 calories – from every meal.

These AbsorbPlates have hundreds of tiny holes in them, cutting off a huge amount of oil as it is absorbed at the bottom.

“To eat healthier, all they need to do is just continue their regular eating behavior on our plate.”

The video description explains:

“Unhealthy eating behavior is hard to change, and most Thai people go for what’s delicious. How can we help Thai people eat healthier without changing their regular meal? We decided to tackle how they eat their food.

In cooperation with Thai Health Promotion Foundation, we created “AbsorbPlate,” the world’s first innovative design that makes Thai food less greasy and allow people to eat healthier in every meal.

Hundreds of tiny holes inspired by the texture of sponge make AbsorbPlate able to separate excess oil from food before people eat it. The plate can reduce up to 7 ml of grease or approximately 30 calories per plate. The plates were designed to be easy to wash. In order to eat healthier, all they need to do is just continue their regular eating behavior on our plate.”
