Authorities condemned the act as "not only unacceptable but a slap in the face" of health workers.
Netherlands implemented stricter measures beginning January 23, Saturday. Government officials explained that the nationwide curfew is aimed at preventing a surge of Covid-19 cases, especially with the new highly-transmissible virus variant detected in the UK.
While many citizens complied with the directive, a group of protesters who are against the lockdown caused chaos after destroying police vehicles and even burning a Covid-19 testing facility.
This happened in Urk, a fishing village in Netherlands.
According to local authorities:
“This is not only unacceptable, but also a slap in the face, especially for the local health authority staff who do all they can at the test center to help people from Urk.”
Mayor Cees van den Bos of Urk said he is ”so ashamed of what has happened. We want peace in Urk.” Health Minister Hugo de Jonge likewise slammed the criminal act, adding ”The fire in a screening center in Urk goes beyond all limits.”
Meanwhile in the city of Eindhoven, protesters clashed with the police, setting fires and throwing rocks at the law enforcers.
Cops had to use tear gas and water cannons. At least 30 rioters have since been arrested.
Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus said:
“This has nothing to do with demonstrating against corona measures. This is simply criminal behavior; people who deliberately target police, riot police, journalists and other aid workers.”
