She posted two photos and now she's being sued for $25,000 per pic.
Could you imagine the hassle of getting sued after posting your own photos on social media? That may sound ridiculous to you but that’s exactly the dilemma singer and songwriter Ariana Grande is in right now.`
The 25-year-old performer is now facing a lawsuit after sharing two pictures of herself on Instagram and Twitter. In the photos, she can be seen wearing a white sweater while holding a transparent ‘Sweetener’ bag, which is the title of her fourth and latest studio album.
Ariana Grande captioned the pictures “happy sweetener day.” The photos, which has accumulated 3,392,035 likes on Instagram, has since been taken down.
According to a report by Dazed Digital, the images were actually taken by paparazzi photographer Robert Barbera and now he is suing the celebrity for posting them online without his permission. He is suing her for either “$25,000 per pic or for the total profits she made from the pics,” wrote the website.
The lawsuit said:
“(Grande) infringed (Barbera’s) copyright in the photographs by reproducing and publicly displaying the photographs on the Instagram page… (Grande) is not, and has never been, licensed or otherwise authorised to reproduce, publicly display, distribute and/or use the photographs.”
Grande has over 155 million followers on Instagram.
Meanwhile, a Unilad article tells us Ariana Grande isn’t the first celebrity to face a lawsuit after sharing photos on social media.
Gigi Hadid was also sued for copyright infringement after posting pictures without asking for permission.
Hadid later reacted to it, writing:
“Yesterday I heard from my management that I am being ‘legally pursued’ for my last (now deleted) Instagram post.
“I posed/smiled for the photo because I understand this is part of my job…but these people [paparazzi] make money off us every day. LEGALLY stalking us day in and day out — for nothing special.”
The fashion model also added:
“I had no way of knowing which of the 15+ photographers outside that day took these exact photos; if the person had just commented on my photo I would have been happy to tag and give credit.”
