Arya Stark Kills the Night King, Becomes the Unexpected Heroine of the Battle of Winterfell
Not today.
Arya Stark not only survived the epic Battle of Winterfell, but she also cemented her status as the ultimate badass in Game of Thrones. It was she – not Jon, not Daenerys, not Jaime – who killed the Night King.
Indeed, most people didn’t expect Arya to be the one to put an end to the Night King’s reign of terror. In killing him, she also brought on the decimation of every single White Walker and wight in existence.
After barely escaping the dead who were able to get inside the castle and getting rescued by The Hound and Beric Dondarrion, Arya came face to face with Melisandre.
Seasons before, Melisandre predicted that Arya will kill many people, that the young Stark will close “brown eyes, green eyes.”
After a pause, the Red Woman added “blue eyes,” and Arya took the hint, realizing that it was in her destiny to kill the Night king.
Winterfell was almost on its way to obliteration. The dead have outnumbered the living and have invaded the castle walls. Those fighting for the North were about to die from exhaustion. The “dead” Viserion was blasting what’s remained of the castle to smithereens, as Jon was preparing to die in the face of the dragon.
Out in the Godswood, Theon tried to stop the Night King from getting to Bran but with no avail. After killing Theon, the Night King and his generals walked towards Bran, who was sitting calmly awaiting his fate. Just as the Night King was about to pull his weapon to strike Bran, Arya came out of nowhere to stop him.
The Night King was about to choke her to death when she dropped her dagger to her other hand and using that, stabbed the Night King, which led to his instant death.
The Valyrian steel dagger she used to stab him holds a very special significance. It was the same dagger that was used in the attempt to assasinate Bran in the first season. The dagger has since passed lots of hands – from Catelyn Stark to Littlefinger, who later on handed it back to Bran.
Bran gave the weapon to Arya when the siblings reunited later on in Winterfell. Perhaps he had a premonition that Arya will use it to save his life and the rest of humankind.
According to Time, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said that they have known for three years that Arya would be the one to kill the Night King.
“We knew it had to be Valyrian steel in the exact spot where the Children of the Forest put the dragonglass blade to create the Night King. And he’s uncreated by Valyrian steel.”
Twitter definitely exploded with Arya love.
We can’t wait what Arya will do next. Is she also the one slated to kill Cersei?
