Some businesses want to implement a "get the jab or lose the job" policy in the country.
With the Covid-19 vaccine expected to roll out soon in Australia, several businesses are declaring the desire to ban workers who refuse to get inoculated. Acting Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly recently said that the country is anticipating a March distribution of two vaccines.
Moreover, business owners are expressing concern about the situation they will face in the near future. In fact, they want the government to issue an order that will allow them to make vaccines mandatory for their workers.
In an interview, Peter Strong, chief executive of the Council of Small Business Organizations Australia, said:
“If you’ve got four employees and one of them doesn’t get vaccinated and the other three say, ‘I’m not working with that person’, what do you do?’ It leaves employers between a rock and a hard place. That’s the dilemma we’ve got.”
“The other dilemma is there are a lot of small business people out there,” added Strong. “Some of them might decline the vaccine. Where does the worker go? That’s an issue we have got to talk about as well. We have got to have black-and-white law here so if someone declines the vaccine we can stand them down.”
Meanwhile, federal health minister Greg Hunt has assured the public that the country “is on track and ahead of schedule” when it comes to the process of vaccine approval.
“We expect that Australians will be fully vaccinated by the end of October, on the basis that it’s free, universal and entirely voluntary,” said Hunt. “We want to urge as many Australians to be vaccinated as possible.”
