She's one determined baby.
Newborn babies are always thought to be helpless, that all they can do is cry and squirm a few minutes after birth. However, this one baby in Brazil has stunned people, especially hospital staff, after she tried to do a walking motion right after she was born.
A video of the baby has gone viral, in which she was getting her legs to move while she was held by a midwife. The midwife, believed to be working at Santa Cruz Hospital, according to The Sun, was seen holding the baby on the chest with one arm. She explained that she was trying to give the newborn child a bath but she just wanted to walk. Reportedly, the caregiver tried to put the child down but then started to push off again to walk.
The midwife was heard, saying, “Oh my gosh, the girl is walking. Good gracious!” in Portuguese, as translated by the publication.
The video was uploaded on YouTube and has since been watched and shared millions of times.
Normally, a child would be around eight to 12 months to start walking. While this baby’s will and determination shocked the world and was considered by some a miracle, a pediatrician said that it’s actually a normal thing for newborns to do.
Anne Tait, a pediatrician in Auckland told Stuff that the walking motion is “not a miracle” and is something that is present at birth.
“It’s not a miracle. It’s the stepping reflex, totally normal,” Tait said after seeing the video.
“I have seen that before and I have seen a crawling reflex as well. As a registrar many years ago I saw a baby actually crawl up a mother’s belly to latch on to the breast.”
Tait also confirmed that babies can do many things the moment they are born.
“We have a whole lot of primitive reflexes we are born with. The startle reflex, the grasping reflex, the sucking reflex. I demonstrate some of them in my clinics with parents. Everyone thinks babies can’t do much but they can actually do quite a lot.”
