After 27 years of marriage, billionaire couple Bill and Melinda Gates shocked the world by announcing they are getting a divorce. “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” read a statement posted on their Twitter accounts last May 3, Monday.

Bill and Melinda first met back in 1987 when she started working for Microsoft. The two later fell in love and tied the knot on January 1, 1994 in Lanai, Hawaii. They raised three children and have also established the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to “fighting poverty, disease, and inequity around the world,” according to its official website.

While the couple assured they will continue working together in their foundation, they emphasized that they “no longer believe” they can “grow together as a couple,” their tweet said. ”We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”

According to official court documents obtained by news sources on Tuesday, Melinda described her marriage with Bill as “irretrievably broken.”

Meanwhile, the document also said that Melinda does no require “spousal support” and a separation contract will help determine division of properties.

“We ask the court to dissolve our marriage and find that our marital community ended on the date stated in our separation contract,” the document likewise mentioned.

This could be one of the world’s most expensive divorce ever, a Good Morning America report claimed.
