Four-Year-Old Boy Tragically Dies in Another Escalator Accident in China
A few months after a woman tragically died after falling through loose metals at an escalator landing in Jingzhou, China, a four-year-old boy suffered the same demise in an escalator in the city of Chongqing.
The 4-year-old boy was killed in another freak escalator accident after he was crushed between the floor and the moving handrail. The unnamed child was with his mother and sister at the Hongqihegou metro station in south-west China’s Chongqing municipality when the incident occurred.
The poor boy died after his body was crushed by the escalator handrail.
The boy’s chest was wedged between the bottom of the handrail and the ground.
Apparently, he was left unsupervised.
Local reports revealed that subway station employees were only able to turn off the moving escalator after 20 seconds.
Due to severe injuries, he was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.
On its Weibo account, the Chongqing Rail Transport Authority revealed that they are currently carrying out an investigation regarding the incident.
“We are deeply regretful and heartbroken over this case! We also would like to remind all passengers to look after their young children and old folks when travelling, be more alert, and avoid similar accidents!”
Lately, a series of accidents involving lifts and escalators seem to be occurring frequently in China. Consequently, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau conducted an inspection and ordered the “indefinite suspension” of its 33 machines in Shanghai.
