Breakdancing To Be Included As An Olympic Event in Paris 2024

Street dancing is finally going to get the acknowledgement it deserves. The International Olympic Committee has been added to the list of sporting events at the 2024 Olympic Games to be held in Paris, France.

The event will be known as “breaking,” which has been included because the IOC looks to have a “strong focus on youth”. The organizers of the Paris games said that they want to create an Olympic program that keeps with the times and attract younger audiences.

Elite breakdancing will be the first DanceSport event to appear at an Olympic Games. It was staged two years ago at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The competitive breakers or breakdancers will be referred to as b-boys and b-girls. There will be 16 participants from each category and they will compete in one vs one battles.

Shawn Tay, president of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), said: “Today is a historic occasion, not only for b-boys and b-girls but for all dancers around the world.”

“The WDSF could not be prouder to have breaking included at Paris 2024, and we thank everyone who helped make it possible: the executive board of the IOC, the Paris 2024 organizers, the WDSF staff and, most importantly, the breaking community itself.”

The IOC also announced that skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will be included in the Paris games too. These events were supposed to debut at the Tokyo Games, which was cancelled because of the pandemic.

Overall athlete quota has been reduced for the Paris games to control costs. There will be 10,500 athletes, which is almost 600 fewer than the number in Tokyo. Also, there will be an exact 50-50 split of male and female participants, a first in the Olympics.

“With this programme, we are making Paris 2024 fit for the post-corona world. We are further reducing the cost and complexity of hosting the Games,” said IOC president Thomas Bach.
