What a heartbreaking story. Kudos to you, mom!
If you were a parent, how would you feel if you find out that your child will soon go blind? I assume it would be a pretty heartbreaking moment.
This was exactly the unfortunate situation that Catrina Frost, a mother from Phoenix, found herself in. Cailee Herrell, her 6-year-old daughter, was diagnosed with Familial Exudative Vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) which means that the poor girl is suffering from a disorder that causes progressive vision loss.
Since Cailee was 3, she has already undergone five laser eye surgeries for her retinal hemorrhages. Regrettably though, the process isn’t really curing the problem and the doctors are expecting that her retinas will soon detach from her eyeballs – which means she could lose her sight anytime soon.
Although undoubtedly devastated by her daughter’s eventual fate, Catrina wanted Cailee to have experiences she can treasure before permanently losing her vision. So she decided to take her to an epic adventure they called a ‘sight-seeing bucket list.’
Catrina said:
“My friend lost her vision eight years ago – I can’t imagine what it’s like and so I asked her if it was just black. She told me it wasn’t because she has memory vision so if I say I’m wearing a yellow shirt, her mind will see it. Her memory bank is full and that’s why we created the sight-seeing bucket list – it’s not just adventures but it’s important for her future.”
So she and her daughter went to check out the ocean at San Diego and to Disneyland so Cailee could meet each princess in person. They also went to Sea World and did some outdoor activities together such as hiking, horseback riding, and rock climbing.
According to Catrina, her daughter is already learning Braille and has began using a cane for walking.
“It’s been an emotional roller-coaster as I tried to wrap my head around my daughter going blind, and not knowing when it is going to happen.
“I am so tearful when I think about it. No parent wants to see their child lose their sight. I would trade places with her in a heartbeat.”
