They say the world is now a better place because she's gone.
While an obituary informs the public of someone’s death and is accompanied by a short biography of the deceased that has been worded by a family member, one that has been published recently caught the attention of the netizens for the wrong reason. Instead of paying a tribute of sort to the deceased, the obituary was oozing with scathing remarks as the children of the deceased used it to air their grievances.
Kathleen Dehmlow (nee Schunk) died recently and was featured in the obituary section of a local newspaper. The obituary started with the information saying that she was was born in the winter of 1938 to Joseph and Gertrude Schunk of Wabasso, a tiny city of less than 700 people in the middle of Minnesota. The notice went on to reveal that Kathleen married Dennis Dehmlow at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in 1957 when she was only 19 years old and the couple eventually became parents to two kids Gina and Jay.
While the first two paragraphs seemed typical of an obituary, things took a turn beginning with the third paragraph as the notice started to decimate Dehmlow’s being. From there, the piece became a venue for her children with her first husband to lambast their mother.
The death notice read:
“In 1962 she became pregnant by her husband’s brother Lyle Dehmlow and moved to California. She abandoned her children, Gina and Jay who were then raised by her parents in Clements, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schunk. She passed away on May 31, 2018 in Springfield and will now face judgement. She will not be missed by Gina and Jay, and they understand that this world is a better place without her.”
Because of what they went through, they wanted to have the last word, hence, the scathing obituary.
“You can’t believe the dysfunction of the family. They’ll never know what we went through but it helped us [to write this]. We wanted to finally get the last word,” he said.
