"Beam me up, Scotty!"
Some people believe that teleportation only exists in science fiction. However, a team of Chinese scientists have proven that it is possible to “beam up” to a new location. They have successfully teleported an object straight into outer space for the first time.
The researchers, who are based in China, sent a photon from Earth to a satellite orbiting 300 miles above the Gobi Desert. They used a process called quantum entanglement, which “occurs when two quantum objects, such as photons, form at the same instant and point in space and so share the same existence.”
The photon was sent out to a satellite called Micius which is named after an ancient Chinese philosopher. Micius happens to be “a highly sensitive photon receiver” with the sole purpose of detecting the quantum states of single photons that are sent from the ground towards it.
Quantum entanglement isn’t a new thing but covering a great distance using the process certainly is. Entanglement can sometimes get lost when photons interact with matter in the atmosphere. Although the scientists had previously managed to achieve teleportation at a shorter distance, this is the first time that a photon has been sent 300 miles into space.
It’s an awesome breakthrough that the researchers are truly proud of.
“This work establishes the first ground-to-satellite up-link for faithful and ultra-long-distance quantum teleportation, an essential step toward global-scale quantum internet,” the team said in a statement.
There is little doubt that the scientists plan to push things even further with their research. For now, sci-fi fans who have always believed in teleportation have something truly exciting to look forward to.
