Chinese Ice Cream Contaminated With COVID-19

• Ice cream samples from Tianjin, China has tested positive of the coronavirus.
• This has been discovered during a routine government testing.
• Boxes of the product have since been recalled, plus employees have been tested and quarantined.
• According to experts, one of the workers may have spread the contamination.

When we say we all love ice cream, this is definitely not what we have in mind. An ice cream product in China has recently tested positive of the coronavirus following a routine testing conducted by the government.

Three samples from the ice cream company was detected with Covid-19. According to officials, 4,836 ice cream boxes have possibly been contaminated and over half of those have already been distributed before the testing results came back. So far, only 2,089 boxes have now been kept in storage. Out of the remaining 2,747 boxes, 935 were in Tianjin while 65 have been sold in the market.

Located in Tianjin, the Daqiaodao Food Company has since been sealed. Their 1,662 employees have also been tested and quarantined. Investigations indicated that the ice cream batch was produced using milk powder from New Zealand and whey powder from Ukraine.

University of Leeds virologist Dr. Stephen Griffin explained that an infected worker may have spread the contamination.

Dr Griffin said:

“Of course, any level of contamination is not acceptable and always a cause for concern, but the chances are that this is the result of an issue with the production plant and potentially down to hygiene at the factory.”

The virologist further shared that he virus may have survived because of the product’s cold temperature and fat.

He also assured the public that there is nothing to worry about.

“We probably don’t need to panic that every bit of ice cream is suddenly going to be contaminated with coronavirus,” pointed out Dr. Griffin.
