The Doctor Pronounced This Patient Dead. But Went Back to Do One Last Thing to the Body.
“Miracles are real, and they are real today.”
– Dr.Chauncey Crandall
This true to life story occurred the morning of September 20th, 2006. Jeff Markin was driving himself to work as usual when he suddenly felt ill. He phoned his boss, who instructed him to go the hospital immediately. Markin doesn’t remember how he was able to drive to the hospital but somehow he managed to reach the emergency room.
There, he collapsed.
Dr. Chauncey Crandall, the cardiologist assigned that day, was at the ICU when he heard the alert call over the hospital’s PA system. A second call came, which specifically asked for him. When he arrived at the ER, the medical staff had already started performing measures to revive Markin. Dr. Crandall and the team continued to work on him for approximately 40 minutes, and defibrillated him at least 12 times. Despite all measures, Markin was unresponsive so the doctor had to call the time of death.
A nurse attended to Markin’s body while Dr. Crandall finished his chart. As he was about to leave, he heard a voice that asked him to turn and go back to the patient. He ignored this at first, thinking that there’s nothing more left to do. But he heard the voice again, asking him to go back to Markin’s corpse.
What happened next was nothing short of a miracle, and probably the best thing Dr. Crandall could do for a patient.
