Dogs are apparently capable of detecting illnesses with a sniff, and this pup used her ability to save her owner from death.
All the while we thought that dogs can only be trained to sniff bombs and drugs. Apparently, they can also act as live MRIs that can detect serious health problems hiding beneath your skin. There are no scientific explanations yet or studies that claim dogs can smell illnesses, but this pup surely had some amazing way of saving her human from a deadly health condition.
Keola, an American Akita, seems to have a strong sixth sense which helped her detect her owner’s hidden sickness. She obsessively followed her owner, Alhanna Butler who happened to be pregnant that time. Nothing could calm Keola until her owners grew suspicious of her behavior. Thanks to her persistence in sending signals, Keola was able to help Alhanna and her baby escape from death.
Ricky and Alhanna’s family is growing bigger as they are expecting a baby boy to join them in their home in Doncaster, South Yorkshire. However, Alhanna didn’t have a smooth time in carrying her baby most especially when she started experiencing pain in her lower back. She brought her concern to her doctor, but she was advised that the severe pain was only a side effect of her pregnancy.
Alhanna then went home relieved but Keola wasn’t as confident and convinced. Alhanna’s furry friend kept acting weird, but she had zero idea what she was up to. She explained:
“When the doctors sent me home and said there was nothing seriously wrong, she just sat staring at me so intently that it really scared me.
I posted a picture of her doing this on Facebook and make the joke about the film Hatchi where the dog also does this and suddenly my friends all started saying I should take it seriously.”
Once taking for granted what Keola wanted to tell, the dog became more nosey, this time alarming Ricky and Alhanna. Fortunately, Alhanna looked at the dog’s warning signs and went back to the hospital for another check-up. She was then rushed into intensive care after doctors found out that the mom-to-be had been mere moments away from death. She said:
“No one really understood how ill I was – but Keola did. She would nudge me and cry and I could never figure out why she had suddenly started doing this. Ricky said she was distraught whenever I went to work, when she had never minded before.”
Apparently, Alhanna had a double kidney infection which was causing her back pains. What’s worse is that it was a rare type of infection that she barely reached the hospital in time to receive care. Alhanna took to Facebook to share about the horrible experience writing:
“Because it was untreated for so long, it was one of the worst cases they had ever seen.
On top of that I had an antibiotic resistant bug that had only ever affected one other person in the U.K. It was killing me and the doctors told me that if I had left it any longer I would have died and more than likely my son also.”
Alhanna was able to survive her health issues and now enjoys her healthy baby boy they named Lincoln. Thanks to Keola’s amazing illness-sniffing ability to see what’s wrong and her loyalty, she was able to save two lives.
