"It broke my heart seeing that footage, but I have no other way."
A Chinese woman recently shared a touching video showing how her pet spent hours and hours waiting for her return. The footage has since gone viral on social media, with many other pet owners admitting they also feel bad about leaving their pooches at home.
The footage, taken via the home security camera, shows us Pi Dan, a 1-year-old border collie, whose name literally translates to “naughty.” He just wouldn’t quit waiting by the window, watching for the moment when Ms Zhang would actually come back.
Ms Zhang, a resident of Shenyang, admitted she felt heartbroken after watching the footage. She told the Daily Mail:
“He does it very often. Most of the time, he would spend the entire morning just waiting there. Sometimes he would maybe take a short nap in the afternoon. It broke my heart seeing that footage, but I have no other way.”
“I try my best to take him everywhere to play during weekends and holidays. I also considered keeping another dog, but I was worried that they would both wait for me. I would be even more heartbroken,” she added.
Meanwhile, other dog owners confessed they can relate to the dilemma with one commenting:
“After keeping a dog, not being home for one day feels like a sin. I would feel so guilty and I would do anything to stay with it all the time. It’s like being in a romantic relationship!”
“I have the exact same working time as you. My dog has the exact same waiting time as yours,” someone also said.
In a post by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), we learn:
“Separation anxiety is triggered when dogs become upset because of separation from their guardians, the people they’re attached to…
“Some dogs suffering from separation anxiety become agitated when their guardians prepare to leave. Others seem anxious or depressed prior to their guardians’ departure or when their guardians aren’t present. Some try to prevent their guardians from leaving. Usually, right after a guardian leaves a dog with separation anxiety, the dog will begin barking and displaying other distress behaviors within a short time after being left alone—often within minutes. When the guardian returns home, the dog acts as though it’s been years since he’s seen his mom or dad!”
