GPS Tracker Exposes Your Cat’s Crazy Adventures At Night While You’re Sleeping

Think your cat just stays indoors while you’re sleeping at night? Well think again, my feline-loving friends!

A recent research used GPS trackers proved that some of our pet cats may be wandering as far as “three kilometers from home” and we’re not even remotely aware about it.

Conducted by The Central Tablelands Local Land Services in Lithgow, New South Wales, Australia, the Domestic Cat Tracking Project revealed that, yes, our beloved pets have the tendency to explore the great outdoors at night.

There’s more to your cats than meets the eye! 

Senior Land Service officer Peter Evans said:

“When you speak to a lot of cat owners they say: “Oh my cat just sleeps on the end of my bed, it doesn’t go anywhere.”

However, the Domestic Cat Tracking Project has debunked that myth – using GPS trackers.

Cat owner Stephen Barnes described his cat this way:

“I thought Semi particularly would be just local — bottom of the garden or next door’s yard.”

Much to his shock though, GPS tracking showed that Semi went “over the hill and far away” roaming about 3 kilometers away from home.

“It was surprising. If anyone had asked me before, I would have said the cats just hang around, never far from the backyard,”Stephen admitted.

He guessed that his cat might be “looking for food which is probably the primary thing because he’s usually around eight and a half kilos which [the vet says] is far, far too heavy.”

Tiny GPS motion sensing devices were attached to the domestic cats using harnesses for about 10 days to monitor how far the pets are moving without any owner supervision.

The project wasn’t without a struggle too, according to Evans who shared:

“We started the project with 25 registered volunteers, but some cats refused to wear the harnesses, some lost their GPS monitoring devices, and some devices appeared to have been stolen, leaving us with a final tally of 14 cats completing the project.”

“The maps of their movements gave us some intriguing insights into their expeditions around the neighborhood,” said Evans.

Still, the data they gathered provided interesting information about the furry creatures.

“In general the other cats involved in the project had a range of several hundred meters and the maps of their movements gave us some intriguing insights into their expeditions around the neighborhood.”

The research encouraged cat owners to “pay closer attention” to their pets and to “bring them in at night.”

Stephen, on the other hand, had a message for fellow cat owners:

“After taking part in the project and learning just how far the cats are prepared to wander, I would urge people to pay closer attention to where their pets are and to bring them in at night. Also it’s clear that cats need to be desexed because it’s very difficult to ensure they’re kept away from other cats.”
