Perfect place for soul searching!
There are many secluded places on earth which have such breathtaking views, but the enchanted island of Gaztelugatxe may just be one of the most beautiful spots ever.
Located in the Bay of Biscay just outside of Basque country, the cone-shaped island only has one structure standing on it – the small hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The island is accessible through a narrow man-made stone bridge leading to the hermitage. Legend says that once you have climbed the 241 steps leading to the hermitage, you should ring the bell and make a wish.
According to records, it was used as a bastion against Alfonso XI, the King of Castile; seven knights from Biscay heroically made a stand and eventually forced the monarch to withdraw. In 1596, the island was attacked again, this time by Sir Francis Drake and his troops, who ransacked the island and threw the lone hermit inhabiting it off the cliff.
