Expensive Pot of Chinese Tea Costs Over $10,000

This tea drink is found in the mountains and is rarely available. It's also extremely expensive!

Tea aficionados would most probably have head of China’s da hong pao. It is a good cup of tea that is for the truly wealthy. The da hong pao is one of the priciest teas in the whole world, which costs more than $10,000 dollars.

To expound even further, it costs more than 30 times its weight in gold. One gram of the da hong pao sells roughly for $1,400.

The da hong pao is a rock tea that is grown in the mountains.

This particular expensive oolong tea strain can be traced to the city of Wuyishan located in southern China. The said location is the tea capital of China and is about two and a half hours from Beijing. For those who are not ready to splurge on the pricey tea, there are “cheaper” versions of it, costing around $100 a kilogram.

True da hong pao comes from the mother trees that are used to make tea for so many generations. Unfortunately, there aren’t many left. The da hong pao is a rock tea that is grown in the mountains. If you would like to try the tea that is made from the original trees, you will have to be prepared to pay of course. The market of this tea strain is very exclusive that there are brokers who can connect wealthy tea collectors to sellers.

Da hong pao is collected in spring, between March to May.

If you would like to experience or try tea for the first time, the best place to go to is Wuyishan, as it is home to the best teas in the world. You don’t have to try out everything all at one go of course since it can be expensive.

Wuyishan doesn’t get a lot of tourists but when they do, sign up for one of their tours.

The town of Wuyishan doesn’t get as much tourists as the other cities in China so it would do you well to plan your visit in advance. Apart from the tea lessons, you can also try their local activities such as hiking and bamboo rafting.
