It was assumed that the woman is an American. She was identified as working as an English teacher in Taichung.
While onboard a passenger train in Taiwan, a foreigner woman made a fuss when she was called out for wearing her face mask the wrong way. This “Karen” apparently upset her fellow passengers for her behavior.
In a report from the China Post, the “Karen” was sleeping on the train on the way to Taichung and she was not wearing a mask. The authorities on the train approached her and asked her to wear one.
She complied, but she put the mask on backward and it kept sliding down her nose, which frustrated the people around her further. One of the passengers attempted to explain to her why wearing the mask that way would not work and she snapped and yelled at the passenger.
The woman shouted “I’m wearing the mask! Just leave me alone!” several times as authorities tried to make her wear the mask properly.
She also insisted that she “didn’t do anything illegal” and got mad at the passenger who reported her instead of just asking her directly to wear a mask.
“The reason I asked you to wear your mask is because you were coughing,” explained the passenger.
The woman responded: “And when I wear it too much, I cough.”
She was also touching the front of her mask and unhooking it from behind the ear several times while she was talking.
It was assumed that the woman is an American and reports identified her working as an English teacher in Taichung. It was also noted that she caused similar trouble before.
In the end, “Karen” was kicked off the train for refusing to wear a mask correctly and causing a scene.
The story was posted on Reddit and comments berated the foreigner for her unacceptable behavior.
User “Ex-maven” wrote: “It doesn’t look like she’s going to get a moment’s peace as long as she resists wearing a mask properly and remains in country—nor should she. She is a pathetic sight.”
They also took note of the fact that she’s a foreigner who refuses to follow local laws.
User “BigsleazyG” said: “Could you imagine breaking down into tears because you are expected to follow local laws in a country [in] which you are a guest?”
Another user added: “I wonder if these Karens think that they carry their freedoms with them when they go to other countries.”
Taiwan is one of the few countries who handled the coronavirus pandemic exceptionally well; the country never had to initiate a mass lockdown and only had 900 cases, with a death count of less than 20 people. Taiwan is very strict with their rules in containing the virus.
