A new study is claiming that being forgetful is not a sign of being dumb but rather an indication of unusual intelligence.
Having a sharp brain is certainly an asset that can help us get through in life. Besides, we always need access to information from our memory bank just like in school exams, work tasks, and even in our daily household chores.
That said, being forgetful can be a total hassle. Just imagine going to a meeting but you forgot a material you should use on your presentation, or an important line that you should deliver in your speech. Think about wanting to do a general cleaning but you can’t even remember where you stored the vacuum cleaner. Or what if you ran to the grocery but you suddenly forgot what you should buy.
When things like these happen to us, we usually feel a little dumb. We worry that something’s probably wrong with us. The brain lapse would make us think that we are lacking and we end up being envious of people who have sharp memories.
But a new study says we shouldn’t feel brain-deficit, and it’s certainly not like we suffer from short term memory loss like goldfishes. In fact, the study done by the Neuron Journal suggests that forgetting is just a natural process happening in the human brain, and that it might actually make you smarter!
While we used to believe that the ones who remember most things are the smartest, it is actually those who forget things that arrive at safer data. The brain works intelligently that the hippocampus (the brain’s area for storing memories) removes the most important details which is actually a vital process in decision making.
From the study, it says that the real purpose of our memory is not to remember facts, but to help us make intelligent decisions by retaining valuable information. As much as this sounds like it would need sharp memory, it was found out that being forgetful actually eliminates outdated data in our brain and allows us to focus on something more important or generate a picture that is much easier to understand. In simpler terms, the brain continuously overwrites data from our memory with newer ones. Hence, we are able to come up with more intelligent decisions.
To prove this point, the great Albert Einstein was a pillar of Physics and has developed several theories to are still the bases of many studies today. But actually, this genius is also known for being absent minded!
