These pictures look like they were taken from a fairy tale book!
The recent polar vortex certainly resulted in some truly confusing weather. However, it also gave way to amazing natural phenomena that have luckily been captured on camera. In this case, we have images of Lake Michigan when it finally thawed after the temperature went back to normal. But instead of simply melting all the ice, the frozen lake shattered into millions of pieces and the results are stunning.
Lake Michigan remained frozen for several weeks last winter due to the polar vortex. Spring finally brought warmer weather, allowing the water underneath the ice to start moving. As a result, the frozen surface broke into millions of pieces and you can see how amazing it all looked in the following photos.
Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America. It is the only one located entirely within the United States since the other four Great Lakes are shared by the U.S. and Canada.
Lake Michigan is also the second-biggest of the Great Lakes by volume (1,180 cu mi or 4,900 km3). In addition to that, it is the third-largest by surface area (22,404 sq mi or 58,030 km2), after Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
Some of the earliest people that lived in the region were the Hopewell Indians. However, their culture declined after 800 AD. In the next few hundred years, the area became home to people known as the Late Woodland Indians.
Today, about twelve million people live along Lake Michigan’s shores, mainly in the Chicago and Milwaukee metropolitan areas.
The Great Lake is truly a place of wonders. Some pointed out that the photos made Lake Michigan look like the kind of place you would only find in a fairy tale. Personally, it looks like The Hundred Years Winter in Narnia when Jadis the White Witch was still queen.
