Nothing but respect for the Lady of Bear Island!
There’s a good reason why people love Lyanna Mormont. The pint-sized Lady of Bear Island has been proving that little girls can stand up to old men and effectively lead her fighting men into battle. Not surprisingly, Game of Thrones Season 8 has made sure Lyanna got an amazingly heroic moment during the Battle of Winterfell.
Lyanna Mormont has always been portrayed as a feisty young girl in Game of Thrones, even when she wasn’t onscreen. However, fans immediately fell in love with the Lady of Bear Island when she showed up in Season 6. It didn’t take long before Lyanna became a fan favorite, which meant she had to have an epic scene in the Battle of Winterfell. WARNING: The article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 3 so proceed with caution.
In The Long Night, Lyanna and her remaining fighting men held their own in Winterfell’s courtyard. However, the young girl was thrown aside when an undead giant crashed through the gates. The injured Lyanna still gets up and attacks the giant, which picked her up and crushed her. With her dying breath, Lyanna thrusts a dragonglass blade into the giant’s eye, effectively killing it.
Lyanna’s death had people feeling very emotional. After all, everyone was rooting for the little girl to survive all the way to the end of Game of Thrones. Nevertheless, fans were proud of what Lyanna accomplished in the Battle of Winterfell.
Interestingly, Game of Thrones producers David Benioff and DB Weiss revealed that Lyanna Mormont was initially meant to appear in just one scene in the series. However, they decided to keep the character after meeting Bella Ramsey. Weiss stated that Lyanna’s moment was especially crafted for the character.
“It just did add the whole level of complexity to that moment that I’m sure a lot of people would’ve been OK not having there if we had demanded to cut it. But I think they also understood why we needed to give one of the strongest smaller people in the show a chance to go out taking down one of the strongest larger things we’ve ever seen in the show,” Weiss said.
Overall, Lyanna stayed true to House Mormont’s house words: “Here We Stand.” She stood her ground until her final breath, just like her uncle Jeor Mormont and Jorah Mormont, and we couldn’t be any prouder of her.
