‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 8 Hinted At The Night King’s True Identity

The Night King could be related to two major characters in the final season!

The final season of Game of Thrones has just started but it certainly gave fans a lot of things that they have been hoping for. There were several reunions as well as shocking moments that brought the story closer to the ultimate confrontation between the Seven Kingdoms and the White Walkers. But did the first episode also offer a clue about the Night King’s true identity?

The Night King has been the subject of several theories before the premiere of Game of Thrones Season 8. Some even believe that Bran Stark himself might be the leader of the White Walkers. However, the episode Winterfell may have finally confirmed that the Night King is connected to a completely different major character.

The Night King could be related to two of the major characters in ‘Game of Thrones’.

Fans already know that the Night King was a regular guy before he was taken by the Children of the Forest and turned into an icy zombie. Naturally, people believe he could be the ancestor of some of the show’s beloved characters. Interestingly, the Game of Thrones segment Inside The Episode held the first clue to the Night King’s identity.

In the segment, executive producer David Benioff discussed the pivotal scene where Jon Snow finally mounts Rhaegal and goes on an exciting dragon ride with Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon. Here’s what Benioff had to say about the sequence.

“No one has ever ridden a dragon except for Dany. Only Targaryens can ride dragons and that should be a sign for Jon. Jon’s not always the quickest with the uptake but he gets there.”

That’s right. Benioff confirmed that ONLY TARGARYENS CAN RIDE DRAGONS. We already know that Jon is a Targaryen but this might also confirm that the Night King himself is also a Targaryen.

The second clue appears in the scene where Tormund Giantbane, Beric Dondarrion, and Dolorous Edd find little Ned Umber stuck to the wall with several limbs arranged in a strange symbol. When the boy is revealed to be a Wight, Beric sets him on fire and the symbol becomes clearer. It has an eerie resemblance to the Targaryen sigil.

Does that symbol look familiar?
Perhaps because it looks like this:

So does this mean that the Night King is actually a Targaryen hellbent on claiming the Iron Throne for himself? Is he after the last living Targaryens in Westeros? The truth could finally be revealed in the next few episodes of the final season.

Game of Thrones Season 8 airs on HBO every Sunday nights at 9 PM.
