This Gorgeous Village Without Roads is Straight Out Of A Magical Book

Do you ever dream of living in a place where life is generally simple and the daily scene is just marvelous? Somewhere where there are no public transportation vehicles emitting polluted air and honking irritating horns?

If you think the Earth has run out of that kind of place, you are wrong. You will surely be delighted by this place we discovered, which has no roads at all.

The main mode of transfer? Walking and small boats! Ah, what simple life!

The place is called Giethoorn and it is located in Netherlands. Marvel at the lovely photos below:

The village was founded in 1230 by refugees from the south.

They were looking for a new place to stay and were amazed to find heaps of goat horns left by a massive flood.

That is the reason why the village was name “Giethoorn,” which literally means “the horn of goats.”

As the refugees continued their stay, they found a number of peat deposits.

Peat or turf is the accumulation of organic material or partially decayed vegetation.

The settlers dug for more peat deposits, which left numerous holes on the ground.

Years passed and the holes turned into lakes.

Those lakes turned into the marvelous canals that are being enjoyed by the citizens up to this day.

The canals are so lovely, it is actually one of the main tourist attractions of the place.

The village is made up of little islands, where houses stood.

People usually ride boats to get from one place to another.

Another amazing thing is, they do not use diesel engine-powered boats. They only use the electric ones to keep the air clean. Isn’t it amazing?

Most houses in the village are located on islands, connected by 50 wooden bridges.

In the past, the houses usually have thatched roofs.

This is because of the rich supply of reeds in the marshy areas. Only rich families were able to afford tiled roofs.

Now, thatched roofs are much more costly.

Giethoorn first entered the limelight in the 1960s, when a Dutch film director named Bert Haanstra filmed a movie there.
