Jennie Stejna, 103, is not the world’s oldest survivor of coronavirus (COVID-19) on record; but she is definitely the coolest grandma to conquer the disease.
The record for the world’s oldest COVID-19 patient is currently with Maria Branyas, Spain’s oldest living person. However, Jennie made the news for overcoming COVID-19 and for grabbing a beer to celebrate her second chance at life. Now, Jennie is even considered by some as an American hero.
Jennie was the first to have a low-grade fever at her nursing home and so she was immediately isolated in a separate ward. When they heard about the news, her family had prepared themselves for the worse.
When her two children, three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren said their last goodbyes to Jennie, they asked her if she was ready to go to heaven. Jennie made an interesting by saying, “Hell, yes!”
Granddaughter Shelley Gunn said that Jennie didn’t know how severe her condition was but her husband Adam stated that their “feisty old Polish grandmother” pulled through somehow.
Jennie’s grandson, David Stejna, shared that Jennie has always been the type to have a midday drink to cool off. “She would say, ‘You gotta have a cold beer when it’s hot out during the summertime,'” David said. “Later in the day she would say, ‘I think I’m gonna split a beer.’ She would never say, ‘I am going to have one.’ She’d sip about two and would do it sort of on the down-low.”
When Jennie finally recovered from the deadly disease, the nurses gave her something she has not had for a while – an ice-cold Bud Light in a can.
“She put it to her lips and said, ‘Ooh, that’s cold. It’s good when it’s cold,'” her grandson David reflected. He also said that this situation might have given Jennie a new purpose in life – “to give people a glimmer of hope.”
The story quickly made its rounds online and people are quick to react to the bad-ass grandma who beat COVID-19.
Even the beer company’s official Twitter handle posted about it.
