Dr. Heimlich has demonstrated the maneuver countless of times, but has never used it in a life and death situation before.
Dr. Henry Heimlich, 96, was quietly eating his dinner in the dining room of the Deupree House, a senior living community in Cincinnati, Ohio when Patty Gill Ris, who was sitting next to him, started choking.
Luckily for her, Dr. Heimlich was also there on the scene. Dr. Henry Heimlich is the inventor of the Heimlich maneuver, an emergency response technique for choking which has saved countless lives in the past. So naturally, when he saw that Ms. Ris needed help, he immediately responded by performing the maneuver – by placing his arms around the woman’s waist, putting his fist under her ribcage, and pressing three times. The woman immediately coughed out the cause of the blockage – a piece of hamburger meat.
“I’m lucky that I sat there. And God put me right there at that table right next to Dr. Heimlich”, Patty Gill said in an interview.
Dr. Heimlich has demonstrated the maneuver countless of times, but has never used it in a life and death situation before.
