Could this be destiny?
By now, we’re sure everyone knows that ‘love at first sight’ is purely a thing of fiction. Experts have already debunked it, saying it’s actually nohing but lust – not love. But does science have anything to say about destiny and soulmates? Is there any chance for two people to actually be in the same place and at the same time only to meet many years later and fall in love?
With a population of over 1 billion, such chance encounters can be extremely rare in China but that’s exactly what happened to a couple from Chengu who achieved viral fame on social media after sharing their old photos online.
According to a VICE report, husband and wife Mr Ye and Mrs Xue only met and fell in love in 2011. Unknown to both of them at the time, they were both at May Fourth Square in Qingdao at the exact same moment way back July 2000.
And it was only recently that they made the discovery as they went through some old pictures. Much to Mr Ye’s surprise, he recognized himself in the background of his wife’s photo.
He shared:
“When I saw the photo, I was taken by surprise and I got goosebumps all over my body… that was my pose for taking photos. I also took a photo, it was the same posture [as captured in my wife’s photo], just from a different angle.”
Apparently, Ye visited May Fourth Square as a substitute for his mother who got sick at the last minute. So he took her spot in the tour group. Meanwhile, Xue was there with her own mom.
The photos since went viral on Weibo, China’s equivalent to Twitter, and numerous netizens have been amazed by their unique love story.
Now the couple’s grand plan is to return to the place to have their photos taken again – only this time they’ll be together with their kids.
Mr Ye said:
“It seems that Qingdao is certainly one of the most special cities [for us]. When the children are older, we will go to Qingdao again and the family will take a photo again.”
