He says the meals are "worse than dog food."
An inmate has been snapping photos of his prison meals and forwarding them to a newspaper, alleging they are “worse than dog food.” The unidentified man, who is locked down in category C HMP Risley, sent a plethora of images to the Manchester Evening News illustrating a range of meals including pizza, fish and chips, and meat patties.
It appears the images have been taken inside the unnamed prisoner’s cell, showing the unappetizing meal served up on yellow plastic plates. He told the paper he’d “rather starve” than tuck into the grub and says it’s worse than what might be served up to a domestic pet.
When the photos were sent to the Ministry of Justice, a representative said that all dinners served to those in a correctional facility meet the guidelines.
The Prison Service said in a statement:
“All prisoners are offered fruit and vegetables as part of three healthy meals a day, which meet nutritional guidelines set out by the Food Standards Agency and the Department of Health.
We are investigating these pictures, and any prisoner found using a mobile can face extra time behind bars.”
Accordant to the latest estimates from the Ministry of Justice, $1.31 is allotted to feed each inmate per day.
It seems that the inmate’s plan to get sympathy from the public backfired as he could now face more time behind bars for smuggling a phone into prison. Meaning, he will be eating these prison meals longer than he should.
As we all know, prison is not a holiday retreat or a travel destination. It is a facility in which inmates are forcibly confined and denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state.
Although being in prison does not mean that these criminals should not be given healthy meals, it is an undeniable fact that they shouldn’t expect fine dining entrees inside.
