It's nice that the president is not going to be "a super spreader of hate," according to an advocacy group.
Former US President Donald Trump often referred to the coronavirus as the “China virus” in his speeches and social media posts. Well, it looks like President Joe Biden, his successor, is making sure that the term doesn’t stick around.
According to recent media reports, Biden may be making moves to ensure that the term is not used in official government documents. His transition team and the White House Domestic Policy Council are reportedly preparing an executive order that will eliminate racially offensive language in a bid to combat discrimination against Asian Americans.
With the executive order in place, government agencies such as the Department of Health and Human Services will remove any xenopobic words used in place of Covid-19.
According to Stop AAPI Hate, there has been an “alarming escalation in xenophobia and bigotry resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The organization’s official website tells us that there have been numerous “incidents of hate, violence, harassment, discrimination, shunning, and child bullying against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders” from March to December 2020. In fact, they have received over 2,800 reports during that period.
Stop AAPI Hate executive director Cynthia Choi said about the upcoming executive order:
“The idea that the president of the United States is not going to be hostile and not be a super spreader of hate is incredible. I hope this order reverses the damage caused under the Trump administration, which used federal dollars and resources to create a hostile climate and led to backlash directed toward our community.”
