A A A

Disaster is inevitable; whether we like it or not, we’ll go through it at some point in our lives. We have to look out for ourselves and our loved ones during those times, but other than staying safe, there’s also another thing to worry about – deceiftul people.

These people come out to look for vulnerable people after a disaster has struck. You can safeguard yourselves (and your pockets!) by knowing the four most prevalent scams fraudsters use to take advantage of others during calamities. Below is a list of how not to become a victim as well.

Looking for a new or temporary place to live in after the storm destroyed your home is the chance for a trickster’s to swindle you. Remember these when finding a new abode:

– Be sure to see the place before renting
– Meet the owner or the landlord of the place
– Don’t give out important information to anyone over the internet

Fake Contractors

After a disaster, some homes only need a repair, and that is when those fraudulent contractors come in to take away all your hard-earned money. Keep in mind that:

– A recommendation is best
– Check the license
– Don’t pay right away
– Beware of a FEMA endorsement – An endorsement is truly convincing, however, the Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA does not certify any contractors.

Fake charities

Almost certainly, this is the most common out of four schemes. Shady website or persons use sham charities to obtain money fraudulently. Here’s what you should do when you meet one:

– Verify the organization-Get in touch with the organization and ask for more details
– Never send a cash donation – Donating through a check or credit card is more a foolproof way to make sure your money reaches the ones in need.
– Double check the organization’s name
– Donate only to verified charities and organizations

Clickbait

Although this may be the least harmful, it is still worth mentioning. Fake news, stories, and photos are very rampant. They put it up to cause a commotion and seek attention when it’s not necessary.

It is wiser to be cautious than to be hasty and regret something later.
