The trainer later said such cases are "very rare, but animals are animals."
This is the terrifying moment when a lioness attacked a trainer during a circus show in Russia. The said incident has been captured on film and eventually made rounds on social media.
In the viral video, we can see the lioness jumping on Maxim Orlov, then clawing and biting him, in front of the shocked audience. According to reports, the trainer was immediately rushed to the hospital in Moshkovo, Novosibirsk to be treated for his injuries.
An audience member shared:
“The lionesses went berserk. When we ran away, there was a wild roar from the animals. The tamer was attacked. A pregnant woman had an epileptic seizure from fright. An ambulance was called.”
Meanwhile, the lion tamer simply commented:
“Cases such as today are very rare, but animals are animals. Vega is five years old and has been wayward since childhood.”
Orlov also confirmed that the lioness will no longer be performing with the circus. “We will negotiate with the zoos to exchange her for a little lion cub,” he said.
On the other hand, YouTube netizens who saw the viral video showed more sympathy for the animal than the circus trainer.
“Those lions should be in the wild, not in some tent in Russia,” someone wrote. “Just goes to show that animals don’t deserve to be treated to act for our entertainment,” another remarked.
“Hard to feel sorry for people who make a living off abusing animals,” a commenter also said.
