Men should stay away from this popular hairstyle.
Planning to sport the latest trend in men’s hairstyle?
Before trying to copy the looks of celebrities such as Leonardo di Caprio, Brad Pitt, Jared Leto, and Orlando Bloom, you should first hear what experts have to say about man buns.
Experts have revealed that the hairstyle, which involves men “scraping” back their locks into a knot on the back of their heads, can actually make men go bald. They believe that wearing this hairstyle puts too much strain on the follicles causing hair to fall out.
Dermatologist Dr. Sabra Sullivan told Mic: “They’re putting traction on the hair follicles that the hair is not really meant to take.”
Moreover, the dermatologist explained that the practice can also result to follicle death as well as permanent scarring.
Known as traction alopecia, the condition is commonly observed among African women who wear too-tight braids or weaves. This type of hairstyle causes acute baldness around the forehead and temples.
Other dermatologists such as Dr. Francesca Fusco of Wexler Dermatology explained that traction alopecia is caused by wearing a hairstyle which continuously pulls really tight on the hair and hair follicles. She emphasized that it has to be continuous to cause damage.
“With regards to the man bun, if they’re not pulling it tight, they’re not losing hair,” Fusco said.
Still, the expert discouraged men with androgenic male-pattern thinning at the temple from wearing man buns as it can cause further damage.
