The hospital chief is blaming his family for the incident.
This is the horrifying moment when a man – who has been presumed to be dead – actually screamed in pain and terror while embalmers were starting to cut him open. According to reports, 32-year-old Peter Kigen “came back to life” as the mortuary staff began slicing his leg and were preparing to drain his blood – which led to him waking up.
Kigen, who hails from Bureti village in Kenya, has been declared dead four hours earlier after he collapsed at home due to a “stomach ailment.” Loved ones immediately took him to the Kapkatet Hospital in Kericho but they were told he was already dead “long before” they reached the medical facility.
Kevin Kipkurui, Kigen’s brother, told the local media:
“The nurse later handed me a document to take to the mortuary attendant before my brother’s body was moved to the morgue.”
Fortunately, Kigen regained consciousness in time.
“The mortician called me into the morgue, and we saw him make movements,” his brother added. “We were shocked. We could not understand how they could move a person who is still alive into the mortuary.”
Kigen later shared:
“I cannot believe what just happened. How did they establish that I was dead?
“I did not even know where I was when I regained consciousness, but I thank God for sparing my life. I will serve him for the rest of my life.”
Meanwhile, the hospital’s medical chief Dr. Gilbert Cheruiyot blamed Kigen’s relatives for the mistake, saying they immediately moved him to the morgue without even waiting for a death certificate.
Dr. Cheruiyot said that the staff “asked Kigen’s relatives to give them some time but they accused the clinicians of taking too much time and decided to take him to the mortuary.”
“It was while the mortician was getting ready to embalm his body that she noticed some signs of life,” Cheruiyot admitted. “The patient was later taken to the ward and is responding well to treatment. We hope to discharge him in a few days.”
He also reminded patients’ families about the importance of observing proper protocol.
“Before a body is moved the mortuary, it has to be certified by a clinician,” heemphasized. “In Kigen’s case, we can only say he was lucky, especially because of our qualified mortician who checked him before making any move.”
