Mom With Cancer Refused To Terminate Baby And Later Proved Miracles Still Exist

Getting pregnant might be the best news that Aleks heard in her life but little did she know that she will be asked to give up her baby.

Aleks Patete has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her 7th week of pregnancy. She didn’t have any idea about it until she went for a routine ultrasound where doctors found a 12 cm cyst on her right ovary. As cancer requires complicated treatments, Aleks’ doctors advised her and her husband to terminate the pregnancy immediately to go through aggressive chemotherapy.

It then sounded like Aleks had no other choice as her cancer is putting her nearer the grave but the series of treatments she would undergo likewise means sending her baby to death. Aleks refused to give up on her baby as she strongly believed that the child was sent to her by the Almighty to save her life.

Aleks said, if it weren’t for her baby boy, whom she later named DJ, and the ultrasound, she might have never known that she has a cancer and it could have progressed further. Aleks said:

“It’s a miracle… The cancer could have progressed a lot further, and we would have had no idea if I wasn’t for my pregnancy. God sent DJ to save my life.”

Heartbroken yet strong, Aleks who is a registered nurse insisted on keeping the baby and taking another option for her treatment saying:

“He saved my life… Now it was my turn to save his life.”

Instead of signing for the aggressive form of chemo, Aleks chose a milder chemo treatment. Doctors assured her of the procedure’s safety for the baby inside her. Although Aleks still felt frightened for her son, she had no other choice but to trust in the process. She said:

“As a mom, you don’t want to do anything that could harm your baby… I was terrified, but they explained that it was a relatively safe option.”

Nine months of carrying a baby, going through hormonal changes, body adjustments, and all other sorts of pain can already be considered as great sacrifices but Aleks had to offer more so she and her baby can both survive. Aleks recalled the challenges of her pregnancy and her cancer saying:

“It was rough trying to grow a human and go through chemo… I was so tired and sick that I had to schedule my days off for when I knew I would be feeling ill.”

Despite the dangers of keeping a pregnancy while treating a cancer, both Aleks and her baby survived.

All her suffering finally ended when she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Indeed, Aleks received a wonderful miracle as she and her baby were both safe. She said:

“I think about the things that could have happened and what could have gone wrong and there’s no other reason than the grace of God that everything worked out and we are both alive.”
