"Christmas is a part time job that you have from mid-November to the end of December," he said.
Muslim man Mohammad Hussain couldn’t come home to his family during the holidays because of lockdown restrictions. So for the fist time in his life, he is actually celebrating Christmas with his roommates in Ottawa, Canada – and he has a lot of interesting thoughts about the annual tradition.
Hussain, who works as a a special assistant for parliamentary affairs at the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Industry, took it upon himself to share several of his observations on Twitter. Much to his surprise, his posts eventually went viral.
Hussain tweeted:
“Growing up, my Muslim family never celebrated Christmas. This year I am not going home, because pandemic, so my roommates are teaching me how to have my first proper Christmas.
“I am approaching this with anthropological precision.”
“Christmas is a part time job that you have from mid-November to the end of December,” he added.
Hussain’s series of tweets eventually gained thousands of reactions from netizens and some also took time to comment, with many agreeing that his observations were “absolutely accurate.”
One Twitter user even shared:
“Thank you, Mohammad. This was wonderful. To realy appreciate it, I wish you could have been in my house growing up, watching my parents argue over which lights to put on the tree. It was hilarious, and they did it EVERY YEAR for nearly 60 years.”
With his new-found online fame, Hussain took time to thank everyone “for the kind messages” and reminded that “many families are having to deal with a very different holiday season.” He then encouraged them to donate to non-profit charities Milton Halal Food Bank and Parkdale Food Centre.
