Gundam fans, rejoice! Netflix has officially confirmed that a live-action movie based on the smash-hit anime is now in the works, the streaming giant announced last Monday.
According to reports, Netflix is partnering with Legendary to develop the film with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island, The Kings of Summer) helming the project. Acclaimed comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y: The Last Man) is also on board as screenplay writer and executive producer.
Originally created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Sunrise, the Japanese military science fiction series has been a fan-favorite since it was first introduced in 1979. Mobile Suit Gundam eventually expanded into numerous sequels and spin-offs, along with animated movies, video games, manga, novels, action figures, and plastic model kits, among others.
The series has earned a reputation for introducing mature themes and storylines in the giant robot anime genre.
Naturally, Gundam fans couldn’t help but express their excitement on social media about the upcoming live-action adaptation.
One Twitter user wrote:
“Pleasantly surprised by today’s Gundam Netflix announcement, with wary but positive expectations. Besides, Jordan Vogt-Roberts is no stranger to directing movies that have giant entities fighting each other whilst making criticisms about war simultaneously.”
Another also commented:
“Jordan Vogt-Roberts did a phenomenal job with Kong: Skull Island he’s gonna do an amazing job with a epic Live Action Gundam movie for Netflix! Please be way better than the Death Note movie!”
So far, Netflix has not mentioned any release dates or plot details about the project.
