  • Director Adam Wingard took to social media to shed some light about the new Face/Off movie.
  • He said he and co-writer Simon Barrett are working on a “direct sequel,” not a remake.
  • Barrett also posted about the project, adding “we would never attempt to directly recreate its magic, but we are very excited about what we have planned.”

Fans of the hit 1997 action movie Face/Off, we’ve got some news for you: the new movie currently under development is a direct sequel – not a remake, contrary to earlier rumors. This has been recently confirmed by director Adam Wingard who has been tapped to helm the project.

Directed by John Woo, the original blockbuster starred actors Nicolas Cage and John Travolta respectively as terrorist Castor Troy and FBI Agent Sean Archer. By a strange twist of things, the two eventually ended up swapping faces through cosmetic surgery.

Finally, a sequel – after 24 years!

Wingard, who also directed the upcoming film Godzilla vs King Kong, posted a photo of Nicolas Cage on his Instagram and captioned it this way:

“I would NEVER re-imagine or remake FACE/OFF. It’s a perfect action movie. Simon Barrett and I are writing a direct SEQUEL!”

Meanwhile, Barrett tweeted:

“Adam clarifying things a bit on Instagram… Face-Off is a miraculous film, we would never attempt to directly recreate its magic, but we are very excited about what we have planned.”

Definitely NOT a remake! But will Cage and Travolta return?

When asked by a Twitter netizen about what the official title would be, Barrett responded:

“Well, we’re calling it Face/Off 2, but I imagine that will involve some later conversation as it might not be sufficiently creative.”

As of the moment, several entertainment websites have reported that it still remains unclear whether Travolta and Cage, who are now 66 and 57, will reprise their roles or will instead be recast.
